Background

After over a year of Israel’s military campaign, Gaza’s Universities have continued to operate even as their campuses and infrastructure have been destroyed. To coordinate much needed support for their continued functioning, Gaza’s public universities have come together to form an Emergency Committee of Universities as a response to the urgent call from Gaza academics to coordinate international assistance in order to reopen their universities at the earliest date.

This guide equips UK academics and administrators with practical ways to support Gaza’s universities amid the ongoing crisis in Palestinian higher education. It highlights the role of international academic solidarity in sustaining institutions facing extreme threats, including the systematic destruction of campuses and loss of educators and students. Featuring insights on institutional partnerships, research collaboration, scholarships, and best practices, the guide offers a roadmap for meaningful engagement, ensuring UK universities can contribute effectively to the resilience of Palestinian higher education.

The event will include representatives of the Emergency Committee of the Universities of Gaza and UK-based faculty who have existing partnerships and research collaborations with Palestinian Universities.

The event will be chaired by Omar Shweiki, Fobzu’s director, and the guide will be presented by Dr Basma Hajir, University of Bristol.
